Human diversity in religion and culture is part of Allah’s divine wisdom and decree. The teachings of Islam establish a comprehensive framework for engaging with this diversity, grounded in justice, benevolence, and respect for human dignity in all its dimensions.
In this context, the Charter of Makkah, supported by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud (may Allah protect him), and organized by the Muslim World League, affirms the importance of respecting religious and cultural diversity. It calls for identifying common ground and shared human values as a means of promoting global peace, strengthening coexistence, and fostering harmony within societies.
The Charter was endorsed by more than 1,200 muftis and scholars, alongside over 4,500 Islamic intellectuals, who convened in Makkah, the unifying qibla, representing various Islamic schools of thought and sects. Furthermore, it was adopted by the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for incorporation into their religious, educational, and cultural institutions. It thus became the first charter of its kind to be adopted by the Organization, beyond its own foundational charters and those of the United Nations.
